Designer's Notes

This home was designed as a retreat. The client wanted a space that felt private, composed, and deeply personal. We leaned into a palette of charcoals, deep browns, and soft neutrals to create an atmosphere that grounds rather than stimulates. Surfaces were selected for their tactile quality. From the matte-finish carpentry to the velvety softness of the furnishings, every material was chosen to absorb light and quiet the senses. Vertical panelling adds rhythm to built-ins and subtly guides the eye across the space without adding visual weight. Lighting was kept low and layered. Warm, directional lights softly define zones for living, cooking, and rest. There are no harsh ceiling spots. Instead, ambient glows and discreet task lights allow the homeowner to control the mood at any time of day. The layout supports fluid movement, with the kitchen island and study nook acting as central points for both function and pause. While the tones may be dark, the space never feels closed in. It invites stillness and gives everything a place. This is a home made for slowing down.
“We always knew we wanted something darker and more grounded, but not cold or cave-like. The design team completely understood the balance we were after. The lighting makes all the difference. At night, the space feels calming and enveloping. During the day, the natural light plays off the textures beautifully. It’s exactly the kind of environment we hoped to come home to. Everything was well thought out, right down to the proportions and surfaces. It’s functional, beautiful, and feels like a true reflection of us.”
