Designer's Notes

A project for
Jolene & Haris

This home was about celebrating imperfection, texture, and connection to the outdoors. The client wanted something honest and personal, a home that could breathe and feel grounded in both memory and material. We kept many of the existing architectural bones and leaned into raw finishes like exposed brick, plaster-washed walls, and matte screed floors. These elements tell a story of time and tactility, offering warmth and texture without polish. Nothing is overdone or overly refined, and that was intentional. The layout follows a courtyard-inspired flow. Openings were cut into walls and ceilings to let light travel deep into the home, while breezeways and shaded walkways blur the line between interior and exterior. From the kitchen and dining area to the bathroom and backyard, the home encourages movement and interaction with light and air. We balanced roughness with comfort. Custom wood cabinetry, mid-century furnishings, and playful wall art add warmth and personality to the spaces. The lighting is warm and ambient, adding glow to the evenings without overpowering the textures of the surfaces. This is a home made for barefoot living, open windows, and meaningful pause.
“We told the team we didn’t want a perfect house. We wanted something with texture and soul. They understood that completely and gave us a space that feels so alive. The brick walls, breeze paths, and that open dining courtyard were exactly what we hoped for. It feels natural and relaxed, yet still very considered. There’s so much light, and yet it never feels too hot or exposed. It’s honestly our favourite place to be. The design respects the past while making space for how we live now.”
